Hire for the culture you want, not the culture you have: Some organizations make the mistake of thinking theyâre demonstrating support for diversity and inclusion by claiming to hire for âculture fitâ as opposed to college or grade point average. That may not make a difference. If your goal is a diverse workforce and an inclusive culture, but everyone is the same, the culture will still be the same no matter how much everyone says they support diversity.
Tip: Develop a vision of diversity, equity, and inclusion for your organization. Think of all aspects of your business â culture, systems, and processes â and then take action to create that culture. Hire people who share those values. (For more about company culture, see Chapter 18.)
Get input from other people with the same passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Be willing to listen, let go of aspects of your culture that arenât inclusive, and begin taking steps to transform your present culture.
